The introduction of alien species, pollution, overfishing and a mix of other human activities is degrading the marine ecosystems in Antarctica. There is an Antarctic Treaty system in place which sets out a framework for the continent’s management and protection. However, some threats are not being addressed at present, and major areas of the Southern Ocean fall outside the Treaty’s jurisdiction. Paleoecologists are worried that Antartica’s uniqueness and resilience is in danger which is cause for global concern.
