The TacklingPovertyNZ workshop has come to a close. Over 72 hours, participants engaged with and learnt from policy analysts within the New Zealand Treasury, key people in the wider community and individuals who have experienced poverty first-hand. The discussions aimed to build a shared understanding of the complexities surrounding the current policy landscape, matching knowledge with public policy tools.

Below is an eight minute video showcasing some insightful moments from the TacklingPovertyNZ workshop. You can also view this video on the TacklingPovertyNZ website and our YouTube channel.

We hope to publish a video of the finale presentation at Parliament before the end of the year. The proposals on tackling poverty that the participants presented will be published in a booklet early 2020. The McGuinness Institute will be supporting the participants’ initiatives over the next 12 months. If you would like to learn more about the outputs from this workshop, please see the TacklingPovertyNZ website.

One of the themes the participants discussed during the workshop was education. Their recommendations have been included in our education submission on the update of the Education Act 2020. See the full submission on our website.

About TackingPovertyNZ
This workshop brought together 36 young New Zealanders between the ages 18 and 25 to prepare a youth perspective on the issue of poverty in New Zealand and how we might, as a country, go about tackling it. Participants spent most of their 72 hours in Wellington working hard at Treasury, in order to present their findings to MPs and other guests at the finale at Parliament on Wednesday, 9 December 2020. Every year, the McGuinness Institute has worked in collaboration with the New Zealand Treasury to create a place for young New Zealanders to explore complex public policy issues together. The workshops have always proved exciting, enjoyable and insightful. The McGuinness Institute would particularly like to thank the staff at the New Zealand Treasury for their continued support and encouragement.
