The deadline for applications to join the Mars One mission is fast approaching.

According to the Mars One website living on Mars will be ‘no picnic’ but that hasn’t stopped the 165,000 people from 140 countries applying to be among the first humans sent to Mars. Mars One has estimated the cost of putting the first four people on the moon at around $6 billion US and 24 colonists will be selected for the first six flights, planned to begin April 2023.

Application videos can be viewed on the Mars One website complete with popularity scores, currently Mr Willard Sollano Daniac from the Philippines is rated the most popular applicant with over 16 million ‘hearts’. Every step of the 10 year process, from astronaut selection to the Mars landing is set to be broadcast as a reality TV programme.
